Study of attitudes and behavioral standards of public schools and University students concerning HIV/Aids, 2010

From 2009 to 2010, Institute of Social Studies and Analysis was implementing a long-term project regarding the study of student’s attitudes concerning HIV/AIDS, safe sex, drug addicts and reproductive health.

The following research issues were studied: Level of students’ awareness towards HIV/AIDS, safe sex, drug addicts and reproductive health; The level of spreading HIV/AIDS, sexually transmittable diseases among students (especially male); Social-demographic profile of high risk subgroups; Students’ tolerance towards drugs and drug addicts; The level of unplanned pregnancy among female students. Social-demographic profile of high risk subgroups; Distribution of target group attitudes in continuum – contraceptive vs. abortion; preservative vs. abortion, etc. Acceptability of family planning and birth control; How traditional beliefs concerning the mechanisms of male-female role distribution have changed towards the social institutions, such as: family, career, etc. The level of use of sexual and reproductive health services among Georgian students.

The research covered BBA and MA students of Georgian universities and was conducted by using different research methods, such as: qualitative (focus group discussions (overall 10 focus groups) and quantitative (questioning – face-to-face interview).

During questioning, overall 3000 interviews were completed (students database was delivered from the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia).

Outcome of the research: 1. The  book  - perceptive material for youth (approximately 200 pages), where the final data of the research were described in the HIV/AIDS, safe sex, drug addicts and reproductive health context. Totally 1000 copies were printed and distributed among targeted Georgian universities. 2. Booklets (2500 copies) - the students’ attitudes towards HIV/AIDS, safe sex, drug addicts and reproductive health and in several cases, inadequacies between the standards of the research problems and results were represented.
